Excessive side loads occur when there is a deviation in the well bore or the rod string is in compression. Both conditions may occur in the same well. Side load and guide design determine the number of guides per rod needed to effectively protect rods and tubing. With information from a directional survey, RG Industries computer-aided software can project side loads in all areas of a well. Well history on rod and tubing failure is also considered. To determine proper spacing of guides for effective paraffin control the distance between guides must not exceed the effective stroke length, and guided rods should extend from the surface to slightly below the point in the well where paraffin begins to form (cloud point).

To determine the required number of molded-on guides per 25-foot sucker rod, verify effective stroke length and consult the chart below.

In using the chart for the Reciprocating Combo, the number of sliding scrapers is indicated in the far right column. This number must always be one less than the number of molded-on guides needed.

* When effective stroke length is greater than 85 inches, RG Industries recommends using four molded-on guides and three rotating scrapers per rod for maximum efficiency of the Reciprocating Combo.

Rod guide and paraffin scraper materials are carefully selected depending on factors such as bottom hole temperatures, fluids produced and the presence of abrasives.

Two based polymers, PPA (polyphthalamide) and PPS (Polyphenylene sulphide) are used. These polymers are reinforced with glass or carbon fibre to maximize performance in the harsh environment in which they are used. Mineral fillers are sometimes added to reduce costs and in some instances enhance performance.
